The Savoy Family, with volunteers of the A-rabber Enterprise, have been working to develop the A-rabber community as part of the solution for developing Baltimore related to such areas as youth, health, job skills, community gardens --all delivered in a green way.
See this month's Urbanite and the graphics and article on page 34 by Elaine Eff and Mike Weikert, which highlights many of these ideas.

More School Choice for Families and Students
Dear City Schools Colleagues, Staff, Partners and Friends,
I am pleased to share with you some important news for the students and families of Baltimore City Public Schools. This week, the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners moved City Schools a big step closer to being a school system where all Baltimore City families have school options that meet their children’s interests and needs, no matter where they live.
The Board voted to extend school choice to 5th-grade students for middle school in 2010-11, opening the way for many more students to choose schools for next year where they are likely to succeed.
Our prospective high school students are already choosing their high schools, and many rising middle school students at charter and Transformation Schools are exercising school choice. The Board’s action will give more 5th-grade students that same chance to attend schools that interest and work for them. For details on the middle school choice process, please click here.
It is critical that all Baltimore families with rising middle-grade students know about the school options available to their children for 2010-11. In the weeks ahead, City Schools will publish a Middle School Guide with profiles of the schools participating in the middle school choice process. It will also hold a Middle School Fair on April 10 to showcase students’ various options, and in the latter half of April, middle schools will hold open houses. The application deadline for middle school choice is April 30.
Please help City Schools spread the word about middle school choice, so that all of our students know their options and have the chance to attend the best possible school for them next year.
Thank you. And thank you for all you do for our kids and our schools.
Sincerely,
Andrés A. Alonso, Ed.D.CEO, Baltimore City Public Schools |

Viewfinder 2.0 Brings Poverty Into Focus |
|
|
|
|
As Campaign Consultation entered its second year of production for AmeriCorps VISTA’s eNewsletter, the Viewfinder, we aimed to make the publication more robust – with articles that more deeply and thoughtfully offered information and perspectives to VISTAs in the field and the issue areas they are working in.
In addition, a design refresh and functionality that are fully integrated with the VISTA Campus have made the Viewfinder truly an anchor for VISTA’s outreach efforts to its members and supporters across the country.
Now a monthly online publication, the Viewfinder focuses each issue on a different aspect of poverty and interviews VISTAs on the ground working in these areas. Additional features include alumni profiles, links to ever expanding social media platforms and Through Your Lens, an area of the Viewfinder that invites readers to comment on articles and discuss their own experiences in the communities where they serve.
The Viewfinder is produced monthly and circulates to over 8,000 VISTAs and friends.

Maryland Law Permits Recognition of Legal Marriages of Same-Gender |
|
|
|
|
In a recent release by Equality Maryland, they applauded an opinion released on Feb. 24 by the Office of Attorney General Doug Gansler that states that marriages of same-gender couples validly entered into in other jurisdictions may be honored here at home.
They state that “the Attorney General’s opinion relies on longstanding legal precedent that says couples who have been legally married in another state are treated under Maryland law as validly married, even if that marriage was not performed in the State of Maryland. This opinion will provide enhanced protections for couples with valid licenses. It compels state agencies to act in accord with the law and provide equal protections to couples with valid licenses. This opinion also increases the momentum behind our efforts to advance full marriage equality for all LGBT couples.”
Equality Maryland is committed to seeing to it that the legally valid marriages of same sex couples in the Free State are honored and that state agencies comply with state law by offering equal protections. |

Tens of thousands of people, at over 80 beaches all along the Florida coast, joined “Hands Across the Sand” in protest of pending state legislation to allow off shore oil drilling.
Campaign Consultation is proud to have organized the social media campaign and traditional media blitz for this state-wide initiative, held on February 13, 2010, which became the top story on Google News that day because of all the Facebook and Twitter traffic as well as TV/newspaper coverage.
Find at more at www.HandsAcrosstheSand.com … join the campaign on Facebook and see one of the events held in Seaside, Florida.
Hands Across the Sand / Hands Across the Snow
Campaign Consultation’s president and CEO, Linda Brown Rivelis and Steven Rivelis, were scheduled to attend Hands Across the Sand in Seaside, Florida -- one of hundreds of beach gatherings all along the state’s coast on February 13, 2010 -- to speak out against pending state legislation allowing for offshore oil drilling in Florida.
However due to the Baltimore Blizzard, Linda and Steven, fellow advocates Amy Grace and Karen Blood, held their “just say no to drilling” protest with a Hands Across the Snow event outside of Campaign Consultation’s office.
